Darwin Reef ‘N’ Wrecks Fishing Report 16 August 08

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Its been a big week of fishing for Darwin Reefs ‘n’ Wrecks with plenty of characters and good catches. Over the last week our charters have visited the Perron Islands, Flat Top Banks, Tiwi Islands, Lorna Shoals, Fish Reef, Lowey Patches and of course Darwin  Harbour.

The weather has been hard to predict with winds reaching 20 knots, but when running with the tide the seas are  quite flat and against the tide the chop gets to stand up steep  to about a metre. It is only starting to blow about 8am and dropping off about lunch time.

OUR HALF DAY TRIPS

Scuba Fish, a 32ft very stable Tri hull boat, has just been fitted with a new motor and now cruises at 22 knots, which is allowing us to go further on the half days and get amongst the good Jew Fish, Snapper and Cod.

We caught a Groper weighing in at 120kg on Tuesday and as we brought it up to the surface we found it had eaten a huge turtle, which it spat out as it broke the surface. This monster of the deep was released alive.

All in all there were plenty of Snapper, and we caught 30 to 40 small reef fish each half day trip. Some of these fish go perfectly on the BBQ, which all our vessels are fitted with.

FULL DAY TRIPS

The full day charters are touch and go at the moment with 3-4 metres of tide working the best to catch Jewie and Snapper. The neap tide has been best for Spanish Mackerel if the wind is not blowing. Overall, it has been typical Top End stuff, and it’s not been hard to put a smile on our customer’s faces.

TWO DAY TRIPS

It’s been smiles all round on the 2 day extended tripsThere has been plenty of variety with Snapper, Jewfish, Mackerel, Tuna, Red Emperor, Coral Trout, Mangrove Jack to 5kg, and Tusk Fish. All these are great eating and if the make it past the BBQ and into the esky then we will fillet them , box them up and send you home with home with them.

Don’t forget though; we do encourage catch and release.

A reminder. It’s nearly September, the water warms up, the winds drop, and that means its the best time of the year to go on the 2 day extended fishing trips. The fishing is great and the weather keeps getting better right up until Christmas time.
