The Blue Water
The blue water has fished well over the past few weeks. The weather hasn’t been kind but the fishing has. Those with the larger boats who have been able to get out off shore have had some electric fishing come their way.
Some of the spots targeted have been South Gutter, Fenton Patches and Lorna Shoals. The bottom bouncing crews have picked up some big Golden Snapper to 6kg on both baits and River 2 Sea Live squids. They have also done well on the jewies around Lorna Shoals with reports of some 40lb fish caught early in the week.
Doug and wife Jenny fished Fenton Patches on Tuesday and said the weather was cold and choppy but the fishing was great. He said they landed seven Golden Snapper to 4kg in the first hour of fishing before the GT’s moved in. They had trouble pulling the monsters in on the gear they were using. “The GT’s were weighing up to 10kg and were in plague proportion. I decided to move on to the next spot. We caught some fresh bait in the way of some small Mack Tuna on a small popper.,” he said.
“The school was of large size and we could have fished them all day. We fished one of the artificial wrecks at Fenton and picked up a Coral Trout ( 2kg) and some nice jewfish to 32lb.
DALY RIVER
The cold weather has slowed things down a little on the Daly River though some quality fish are still being caught.
The Daly has been a stand out as the number one destination for the past two months and will continue to do so even though the fishing isn’t as hot as it was a few weeks ago.
The Daly has produced a lot of big fish this year and is miles in front of any other river in the top half of the NT for trophy Barra this year. From all the reports I have had so far this week the river is very clean and the water temperature is starting to drop from its warm temperature of 27 degrees to well under 25. Anthony fished there on Sunday and said they saw a 102cm barra caught on the down stream side of Elizabeth. He said it was caught on a Classic 120 in Bobby Dazzler colours. A young boy of only 16 to 17 years of age caught it and released it after a few photos.
Anthony said he landed 6 fish for the day 4 were legal, while Aaron his mate landed 11 fish, 5 were legal and one measured 92cm. Jeff also fished the Daly the week before last. He said things were a little slower than previous weeks but they still managed to land around 12 fish, with most of them over 60cm. The biggest was just under 80cm. He said the water temperature was a couple of degrees colder than the beginning of the month which has turned it into an afternoon fish as far as he can tell.
With the cooler weather now well set in I think the fishing on the Daly won’t be as good as it was a few weeks ago due to the temperature drop in the water but I do think the Daly will continue to fish well into the dry season.
Corroboree
 |
| Always a special place to be just on dawn! |
Corroboree continues to fish well despite the cooler temperatures. Most boats are getting fish, even with water down to below 24 degrees some days. The water has cleared a lot over the last couple of weeks, particularly in the Rockhole which was really dirty. The Golden Mile has been working well on the inside of the bend, probably because the shallower water warms up quicker in the mornings. The same is true in the main billabong where the first inside corner on the straight heading for the weather station in producing a lot of good fish. Sizes are down but there are still plenty around.
