Barramundi

Barramundi are one of the world’s greatest sport fish.

It is the dream of many anglers to land one of these spectacularly beautiful fish.

Memories of that first thumping strike from a large barra will bathe many a cold winter’s night in tropical glow ; the recollection of the sheer aggression of the take; the awesome display of power when they rear from the water, fighting in desperation to toss the lure back in your face.

Recall the ultimate satisfaction; a truly wild fish, taken in a true wilderness … and released back into that un-tamed, untarnished corner of this great country to live … and fight … another day!

The barramundi is truly the King of our sportfish. Or more correctly Queen of our fishing. “Barra” as they are affectionately known by locals, are born in fresh water, live part of their lives in the salt water, and change into females on maturity.

Growing to more than 30 kilos, 5kg to 12 kg is the average size.

This unusual lifestyle has given impetus to the management and conservation of this prolific breeder. The Barramundi fishing, thanks to local government and recreational bodies, is not only safe from the ravages of our current environment, but catches and size are actually on the increase.

Although they are great eating, sensible controls on size and quantity of catch, together with the promotion of an effective, measurable “catch and release” philosophy, have contributed to a world -class fishery constantly growing in stature.
