The Black Jewfish

The Territory’s Famous Black Jewfish, whilst related to their southern counterparts, are rated by many as being the hardest pullers and fighters of all of tropical sportfish. They hit hard and pull all the way to the boat.
Growing up to 30 kg and more, schools of 5kg to 15kg are commonly found in a variety of waters. They are fond of deep holes in river mouths, often frequent wrecks and prominent underwater structure, but can often be caught lying in small ledges in relatively shallow offshore water.
They love wrecks, and are often found in numbers on the many wrecks in Darwin Harbour. It is not unusual to catch a 15 kilo Jewfish within sight of Parliament House!
Mature “Jewies” can be recognised by their large size and a beautiful shimmering silver when caught. The juveniles have black bars and spots on them.
Fishing for Jewies is usually done with 80to 150lb handlines. More recently short boat rods and overhead reels loaded with 20lb braid or superline have become popular. The relatively small size of the line allows for a lot less lead, a distinct advantage in fast flowing water.
Common baits are quality squid or calamarie, pilchards or a concoction of both. Hooks vary and range from 6/0 through to 9/0 with 7/0 in a straight pattern, such as the Maruto SS1920 short shanked style. |
